मध्य प्रदेशातील ग्वाल्हेर येथील शीतला माता मंदिराजवळ शनिवारी मध्यरात्री एक भीषण अपघात घडला. एका भरधाव ट्रकने भाविकांना चिरडल्याने १२ जणांचा जागीच मृत्यू झाला असून अनेक जण गंभीर जखमी झाले आहेत. हा ट्रक पोलीस नाकाबंदी तोडून थेट मंदिराच्या प्रवेशद्वाराजवळील भिंतीवर जाऊन आदळला.

ग्वाल्हेरचे वरिष्ठ पोलिस अधीक्षक (SSP) धर्मवीर सिंह यांनी दिलेल्या माहितीनुसार, ही घटना शनिवारी रात्री साधारण १:३०च्या सुमारास घडली. छिनोरच्या दिशेने धान्याची पोती घेऊन जाणारा एक अवजड ट्रक उतारावर अनियंत्रित झाला. या रस्त्यावर तीव्र उतार असल्याने अवजड वाहनांना बंदी घालण्यात आली होती.

Thirteen persons were killed and nearly 40 others suffered injuries when a truck crashed into several devotees waiting near a temple in Madhya Pradesh’s Gwalior city in the wee hours of Sunday, police said.
The incident occurred around 1.30 am on the Sheetlamata Mandir road when the truck driver lost control of the wheels. The vehicle then hit devotees who were standing and sitting there and came to a halt after hitting the temple wall, an official said.

पोलिसांनी या ट्रकला थांबवले होते; मात्र चालकाचे नियंत्रण सुटल्याने ट्रकने पोलिसांचे बॅरिकेड्स तोडले आणि उतारावरून वेगाने खाली येत रस्त्यावरील भाविकांना चिरडले. त्यानंतर हा ट्रक मंदिराच्या मुख्य प्रवेशद्वारावर आणि संरक्षक भिंतीवर जोरात आदळला.
या दुर्दैवी अपघातात कर्तव्यावर असलेले दोन पोलिस कर्मचारीही जखमी झाले असून त्यांच्यावर उपचार सुरू आहेत. घटनेनंतर एकूण ३९ जणांना तातडीने रुग्णालयात दाखल करण्यात आले होते. त्यापैकी १२ जणांचा उपचारादरम्यान किंवा घटनास्थळीच मृत्यू झाल्याची पुष्टी पोलिसांनी केली आहे. जखमींपैकी ५ ते ६ जणांची प्रकृती अत्यंत चिंताजनक असून इतर जखमींवर उपचार सुरू आहेत.
